Voodoo Envy Giveway at Notebooks.com

Voodoo Envy Giveway at Notebooks.com

Our friends from Notebooks.com are giving away a Voodoo Envy 133 (and three Lenovo S10) in a raffle. To enter, you’ll have to send a few minutes of your time filling a “Color Survey“. Anyhow, we did it because we want green and orange laptops, and yes this is going to decrease our chances to win, but we thought that you might want to give your opinion about laptops and colors. Good luck!

Thanko Sound Lives Stereo Earphone

Thanko Sound Lives Stereo Earphone

Thanko’s most famous for their range of quirky devices, and the Sound Lives Stereo Earphone is no different. This pair of earphones don’t follow conventional wisdom, featuring instead a tiny speaker on the outer ear that is able to swivel up to 90 degrees, enabling those who suffer from ear fatigue to enjoy audio without shutting themselves out from the environment completely. Sounds ideal if you want to enjoy music while jogging outdoors, but the blare from the Sound Lives Stereo Earphone might also upset other joggers who prefer a quiet morning run without being subject to Britney Spears and other sugary sweet pop stars of today. You can pick up the Sound Lives Stereo Earphone from Thanko for $18.

UK Stretches Waterproof Capability

UK Stretches Waterproof Capability

Plasma Product Innovation of the UK has successfully developed a chemical which is touted to make any material 100% waterproof. This chemical is already being shared with sportswear manufacturers, and it would be interesting to see how it is applied in the world of personal consumer electronics. The process known as “ion masking” will create a water-repelling membrane over materials, so assuming your iPhone is coated with this, dropping it into the loo due to a bad case of butterfingers won’t bother you one bit - other than having to fish it out from the porcelain throne, of course. If this sort of waterproof protection sounds familiar, perhaps it is due to our coverage of the Shellback Coating? Would be interesting to see which manufacturer jumps aboard this train first.

Genius MP-300 Portable Media Player

Genius MP-300 Portable Media Player

Genius is not a brand name you look for when it comes to high end computer peripherals, but it does offer some mid-range devices that will suit those on a tight budget. The Genius MP-300 portable media player comes with the following specifications :-

  • 2.4″ LCD display at 320 x 240 resolution

  • Touch-sensitive keypad

  • MPEG-4, AVI, MP3, WMA and WAV support

  • Integrated FM tuner

  • Built-in speaker

  • Microphone

  • microSD memory card slot

I’m not too sure why Genius priced the MP-300 rather oddly this time round, with a paltry 2GB of internal memory retailing for $101.

Sony Updates Xplod Line

Sony Updates Xplod Line

Sony has revamped its Xplod line of car stereo head-end units that will work with the iPod range - a first from Sony. The models in question are the GT630UI, GT430IP, GT330 and GT130, and all of them will feature a USB connection that not only transfers relevant data from the iPod but doubles up as a charger as well. These models are also the first of their kind to feature a scan technology called “ZAPPIN”, which according to Sony, will perform what auto-scanning does for radios, for digital content instead. Folks who want the GT630UI will have to fork out $160, while those who want the GT430IP and GT330 will have to fork out $130 and $100, respectively when they’re released in September.

Garmin Nuvifone Spotted At IFA

Garmin Nuvifone Spotted At IFA

The Garmin Nuvifone has been spotted at IFA by the folks from Engadget, but even after nearly a year since the Nuvifone was announced, development looks to have stalled as there wasn’t really anything new to get excited about. Videos of the interface were forbidden, and the Nuvifone actually crashed while it was being demonstrated on its planned dethroning of the iPhone 3G, causing much embarrassment to the Garmin rep. Hopefully it will be released in time to really matter.

Altec Lansing FX3022 Speakers

Altec Lansing FX3022 Speakers

Altec Lansing has just rolled out what is the first 2.2 powered audio system from the company that features a dual 4″ subwoofer located in the base of each speaker. The company claims that the FX3022’s 1.5″ drivers will offer “crisp vocals and high frequency detail”, but unless you’re a seasoned audiophile, I don’t think the 128kbps MP3 generation will notice that much of a difference. Still, the speakers do take on a rather unorthodox design and can be connected for iPods as well as other MP3 players via the Aux input jack. Those in the UK will be able to pick up the FX3022 from October 1st onwards for £99.99.

Garmin launches Nuvi 7 Series: 785T, 775T, 765T, 755T

785T, 775T, 765T, 755T

Garmin adds a Series 7 to their GPS line up. the design is reminiscent of the successful of the Nuvi Series and the Nuvi 785T is the most feature-packed of all: it comes with a lifetime subscription to traffic alerts, which is the best way of selling it), a 480×272 pixels touch-display that allows Garmin to use an enhanced visual interface, with a 3D rendering of the road that is supposed to be accurate enough to show you which lane to take (like Navigon does). We wonder how fast the rendering because on the Series 6, it was slow. The most expensive model will cost $700 but depending on your needs, there are more affordable ones.

Sony launches its NV-U94T GPS

Sony launches its NV-U94T GPS

Sony just launched its highest-end GPS navigation system, the NV-U94T. We liked the overall physical design of the NV-U series and the look of the user-interface, but among the many features (like real-time traffic info), there are a few that we found particularly interesting:

High resolution display: 480×272 is equivalent to what you get on a Sony PSP, and believe me, it makes a huge difference in readability when compared to 320×240 screens.

Easy to dock/remove cradle: leaving the GPS in plain sight might result in having your car broken into and many users have to add/remove the GPS often. Now, the mere presence of the dock might trigger a break-in as well, but in too annoying to remove the mount as well.

Arcam FMJ CD17 CD Player

Arcam FMJ CD17 CD Player

Don’t get scared away by the £500 price tag on the Arcam FMJ CD17 - this CD player prides itself in wringing out every single bit (no pun intended) of performance from your audio discs, being a high-end 14-bit player and all. It will feature Arcam’s very own ‘Mask of Silence’ technology (no idea what that does, but I’m all for it if it results in better audio quality) and Stealth Mat EMC damping to reduce electronic buzzing and interference. Audiophiles will probably appreciate the FMJ CD17’s features of a low-resonance chassis that reduces the chances of skipping by minimizing vibration, but most folks who have been weaned on regular MP3 tracks probably can’t tell the difference after being stuck to an iPod for many a year already. Each purchase comes with a 5-year guarantee, showing Arcam’s great confidence in their product.
