Ultraman kitchen timer saves the bacon
Moms might turn into Godzillas whenever they potter about in the kitchen, only to realize that they have left the turkey in the oven for way too long simply because they have a thousand and one other things to attend to around the home. Now, the turkey could have been saved (and inadvertently, the Godzilla side of mom would not have surfaced) if you had bought her the Ultraman kitchen timer for Christmas. Japanese toy manufacturers Kotobukiya have announced the Ultraman Warning Light Kitchen Timer, where it was specially designed after Ultraman’s warning light that is worn on his chest. Featuring similar light patterns and sounds from the shows, you can pick it up for around $27.30 after conversion. I have always wondered how come Ultraman never starts off the fight by releasing his super power and destroy the alien creature right from the get go, when it is quite clear his hand-to-hand combat skills are never enough to subdue an opponent as he is no Bruce Lee or Chuck Norris.

Nikon has half a dozen new Coolpix S-Series digital cameras that intend to deliver advanced functions without coming up short on style and design. The highlight of this group would be the S9300 (although the S9200 does come close in comparison), where both are high-power zoom models which feature 18x optical zoom NIKKOR lenses, and thanks to the backside illumination CMOS image sensor and lens-shift vibration reduction (VR) system that are incorporated within, you can be sure of shooting great looking photos even when there is very little natural light around. The Coolpix S9300 will come with an integrated GPS function in order to make geotagging of your photos far easier, and you can also opt to record movies and stitching them together as a single file later on – right from the camera itself.

If you happen to be a government contractor, do be on the alert as a fake Windows updater is making its rounds, targeting such contractors in an attempt to pilfer sensitive data without anyone knowing about it. A couple of security companies has released a joint statement, describing an ongoing series of attacks that target government contractors which have been happening since at least early 2009. Vendors Seculert and Zscaler claim that such attackers are sending firms phishing e-mails that contain (obviously) fake invitations to conferences, and most of these invites are in the form of PDF files which will take advantage of the security loopholes which are available in Adobe Reader. The file will get to work by installing an “MSUpdater” Trojan which looks like a legitimate Windows Update process, but behind the facade lies a remote access tool which is capable of stealing information from a company’s network – as long as the breach remains well hidden.
Normally, the recycling bins that we see around us encourages us to separate the trash into plastics, paper, glass and “others” – and they are just one step above the trash bin “social ladder” simply because of a greener cause. Not so with London’s latest recycling bins, where these will sport dual-screen LCD displays. Meant to be bomb-proof, these high tech trash bins are expected to make their presence felt all over London – around 25 of these will be installed in due time before the 2012 London Olympics kick off, where each of them will cost the taxpayer approximately $1,880 a pop. What makes these bins so smart? First of all, they have integrated Wi-Fi connectivity, so it makes perfect sense if the authorities might actually have plans up their sleeves to turn it into a wireless hotspot for the masses.

Many rumors that make their rounds on the Internet these days tend to have grounds for confirmation, simply because technology has enabled one working from within a company to be able to grab a snapshot here, or an image there, before releasing such information to the masses in a ninja-like manner. The BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 release date has certainly made its rounds on the rumor mill for some time, with many of them touting a February 2012 release date, but out of the 29 days of the month for this year, just which will be the correct one? It seems that February 17th is the most likely candidate at the moment, but there is still no concrete evidence of that. CES 2012 saw PlayBooks at RIM’s booth running on OS 2.0.0.7116, and there were whispers on the ground that RIM was testing later versions in house as well. All in all, we will just sit down and patiently wait for February 17 to roll by.
