Myspace clones Youtube

Mashable dug down deep and analyzed the new MySpace TV in direct comparison with YouTube. Result? MySpace copies a bunch of stuff. 12 things to be exact.

Does YouTube have the perfect interface for video or what? MySpace isn’t the first to copy the design, nor will they be the last. It seems that a large number of video portals are mimmicking the design.

How to Get the iPhone for Cheaper

Yuppers…note that I didn’t say for ‘free’.

I’m actually pondering getting an iPhone and realized that my 2 year with Cingular/AT&T is about to end. So I am entitled to renew my contract with Cingular/AT&T and as a ‘reward’ get a new phone at ‘new customer’ cost (otherwise known as an ‘equipment upgrade’).

Since the iPhone is available to everyone, contract or not contract with AT&T, you’re best off to renew your contract if eligible (since you’ll do this anyway when activating the iPhone), get the new phone (think Blackberry or whatever is free and can be sold for a few hundred), sell it, and then offset the cost of the iPhone. Then register the new iPhone via iTunes and extend your 2 year contract yet again, but albeit a day or two later. I don’t know what the ‘fine print’ will say, but everything I’ve been reading seems to indicate that this should might be legit.

Apple iPhone WILL Have a SIM Card Slot

Apple iPhone Sim Card

Just had a discussion with a coworker. He seemed to think that the iPhone won’t have a SIM card - at least that’s the rumor he’s been hearing. After extensively searching online (Google) the majority seem to agree…except for one forum contributor on Macrumors. The contributor pointed to Steve Job’s keynote address which confirmed the SIM card. I scanned through the video and snapped a pic to put you all at ease.

YES THERE WILL BE A SIM CARD slot.

We’re Back!

Hi Guys,

After much down time I’ve decided to come back and write.  Sorry for those that I haven’t gotten back to about writer positions.  Things have been a little crazy on my end, but I promise I’ll follow up with each and every one of you.

On another note, I am going to be switching things up and writing more editorial pieces with hopefully a cross over in marketing.  I won’t stray too far from the gadget news but I gotta make some changes to keep my brain alive :).

If you need to reach out to me just ping me at gadgetreview(at)gmail.com

Best,

Christen

25% of Yahoo for Myspace?

myspace-yahoo.jpg

Rumor has it that MySpace has begun talks to swap the site for 25% of Yahoo (a value of 12 billion). Is MySpace worth this huge price tag? Only if they are able to maintain their current traffic rankings for the long term which seem to be in question as of late.

Mashable:

An awesome rumor has been kicked off by The Times: News Corp is discussing a swap of 25% of Yahoo for MySpace. Yup: they think that MySpace is worth a quarter of Yahoo’s $37 billion value.

170 million+ users (some of them real) in exchange for a large chunk of one of the Internet’s biggest players, albeit a struggling one? That said, MySpace is no longer considered the hot thing in social networking among early adopters: Facebook has taken that crown, although its growth has yet to match the rate of MySpace’s.

Gmail can now view Powerpoint slides

gooogle

Google has rolled out an integrated PowerPoint viewer for Gmail which enables you to view PowerPoint presentations as slideshows in your browser, without any dependency on PowerPoint or any third party app.

When you open an email which contains a PowerPoint Presentation (with .ppt extension), you’ll notice a new option “View as slideshow” along with other options like “View as HTML” and “Download” links. The down side is that the built-in viewer doesn’t support sound effects and transitions, you’ll have to manually move through slides using the keyboard or the on-screen arrow keys. Sadly, it’s also a bit handicapped because it fails to recognize the new Microsoft Office 2007 presentation format (PPTX filetype) as a PowerPoint file.

Although Google’s PowerPoint Viewer needs some polishing to be done, it’s still a reason to worry for Microsoft because most users, who purchase Microsoft’s Office Suite, use it to open the documents they receive and rarely to create new ones. Google’s Presentation App, which not just lets you to view, but also edit and create new presentations, is arriving this summer. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

Kevin Rose Video Explains Digg’s future strategy

digg

Mashable is reporting today on Kevin’s surprise visit (via video link) to the TheNextWeb conference in Amsterdam and his plans for the future of Digg. Here are my thoughts on Kevin’s plans and how I think it may not be the best decision for the Digg community.

Kevin essentially announced that Digg is working on something big that will possibly be released in the next 6 months to a year which will change the site in a significant way. Basically they plan to increase Digg’s exposure by increasing the categories on the site to include everything from restaurant reviews, products, pictures and pretty much everything else you can get your browser directed to.

The addition of a pictures section makes perfect sense. The Digg community has asked for this section many times now and has promoted several stories to the site’s front-page in the hopes that the Digg team would listen to them. Now that it’s in the works, the community will rejoice.

In addition to this, it seems like the features Kevin promised last February are also going to be release around the same time line. You might recall that after removing the list of top Diggers, Kevin made the following remarks:

Now, as the site has matured and we regularly get 5,000+ content submissions per day, we believe there are better ways to discover new friends based on your interests and what you’re digging. So if you have been digging stories about digital cameras and Oolong tea, you will be introduced to other top users with those interests… We plan on rolling this out in the coming months along with features and programs that do a better job of rewarding positive contributions to the Digg community.
